Rise of the Tomb Raider has been available on Xbox since November and the PC version is due for release on the 28th January; The newest Tomb Raider is due for release on PlayStation 4 later this year but for now it’s a Microsoft Exclusive. Rise of the Tomb Raider was published by Square Enix and is the sequel to Tomb Raider which is the latest reboot of the series.
Rise of the Tomb Raider continues from Tomb Raider and shows Lara’s further growth into the famous gaming icon that Lara Croft is; the story follows her as she looks for answers about her time on Yamatai from the first game and as she seeks information about the death of her father. It takes her through another tomb raiding adventure as she is faced with the supernatural, more armed enemies, wolves and of course traps. Instead of being driven by survival, this time she is driven by obsession and has become a much more formidable fighter.
In the latest addition to the game series, the puzzles have become more intricate and much more common in the game; rope arrows get much more use in a variety of ways such as in puzzles and for traveling across the map. The ‘challenge tombs’ are a very good reminder of the past Tomb Raider game puzzles, these tombs may be optional but they are imaginative and look just as beautiful graphically as the rest of the game.
When it comes to combat, Lara is now a little more versatile; she can also build nail bombs, smoke bombs, special ammo and molotov cocktails while in combat. There are stealth options available for most combat situations and you get bonus XP when doing stealth kills. Tougher ‘boss battles’ can be found in the wilderness against large carnivores such as bears which need to be killed to progress through the game.
The newest game isn’t really about exploration but players can explore the areas as much as they like, there’s also a fast travel system which is handy for explorers and completionists. Visually the game is amazing, it looks fantastic on console and will no doubt look even better on a PC. Rise of the Tomb Raider is a great continuation from Tomb Raider and has a few new features plus more of what Tomb Raider fans love, puzzles. While it may be great on console, PC gamers will probably find that they have better graphics, higher FPS and more configuration options to make sure the game runs at it’s optimum.
